This GNOME here didn't come with any extensions. Coming from my "mac-like" layout with global menu and dock, it took me a very short time to adapt. All it took to be proficient was re-wiring my brain to use the top left as a hot corner instead of the top right. I added an extension, the app indicators one. I also added a second extension, letting me switch from dark theme to light theme. On GNOME, my apps don't have menubars, and so a global menu isn't needed. Now, in terms of workflow, the workspaces, I now use a lot more, thanks to the easy access through the activities view. On KDE, I tended to only use one workspace, but 2 activities, one for work, and one for play. Basically, I really like the simplicity of GNOME, and the default workflow suits me really well. The default Adwaita look is really bland to me. It's all really, really grey, and the rare blue accents don't make it a less glacial experience. The icon theme is really nice, apart from files and folders. These manilla beige folders are not pretty, and the file mimetypes lack a lot of constrast. The dark adwaita theme is much better. Another issue, is the lack of integration of Nextcloud. I also find the system menu pretty lackluster, especially for sound. I moved from Kmail to Geary, which was a fantastic transition: just setting up an account is night and day. In Geary, it takes 2 minutes, in Kmail, I had to fumble through the enormous settings to even get my folders to show up. GNOME Calendar is much simpler and nicer looking than Korganizer, although Kalendar, with a "K" seems like a more than worthy replacement, with its nextcloud tasks integration. The GNOME software app blows Discover out of the water in the looks department, and in the legibility of the information it displays. It also handles updates better, in my opinion, with more detail and a nicer interface. The rest of my app roster is mainly made out of elementary OS Apps, which,, unfortunately, don't look too good on GNOME: they don't use the elementary OS icon theme, or the elementary OS GTK theme, which makes them look quite ugly and weird. The GNOME apps themselves, though, I really like. Some people might find them too limiting, and that's fine, but I don't have super complex needs in my graphical apps, and I prefer the simple look and feel combined with the features I need. Now, let's talk about my experience with Fedora. The installer is still a horribly designed piece of software. Sure, it does its job, but in terms of UX? It's bad. really bad. I needed DNF once, to install my Nvidia drivers. I also quite enjoyed the way Fedora handles updates: you install them from GNOME Software, and while app updates apply automatically, system updates will install at the next reboot. Now, for the issues, because there were some. First, Fedora 35 comes with Pipewire for audio, and while that system has a lot of promise, it has issues, especially with apps depending on ALSA. I had no audio playback in Audacity, and Davinci resolve had super stuttery audio that made it unusable The main, big unsolved issue, though, is bluetooth. I could NOT get it to work right on Fedora. I use an MX Master 3 and a bluetooth keyboard, and these keep going to sleep, even while in use, and sometimes fail to reconnect.

What you'll get now is a section in the quick settings menu, called "background apps". It lets you close these applications, and that's it. Another change in the GNOME shell is the quick settings. First, the bluetooth setting is now fully functional, letting you see all the devices you previously paired with, and letting you connect to them in one click. All quick settings toggles are split with 2 lines of text: the first one is the name of the feature, and the second one is the setting or the thing you're connected to. You can also click on the speaker icon in the settings to mute or unmute your computer, and they replaced the icon for screenshots. Now, let's talk applications. First is the file manager, Nautilus. It gained back the ability to expand folders in list view. You also now can right click on a tab and get new actions, like closing all the currently open tabs, reopening a closed one, and moving a tab to a new window. Nautilus will also let you directly paste an image onto a directory when you've copied one from another app or when you've just taken a screenshot. Another big change in file management is the image preview in the file picker, you finally can have a grid of icons in the picker. GNOME Web is also getting better with GNOME 44, as it's been ported to GTK4. It now uses a newer version of Webkit's GTK implementation, with a new webGL implementation and webGL2 support. In the interface side of things, Epiphany now moved to the libadwaita about window, it lets you open these preferences by pressing control + comma, you can duplicate a tab by middle clicking on the refresh button, and it now has access to the brand new tab grid that lets you see thumbnails for all your open tabs. GNOME Software got a new toggle to only display free and open source software. GNOME Console got access to the visual tab grid to switch between tabs. GNOME Weather gained a new smooth temperature curve, and a flatter toolbar that merges with the window's content, and GNOME contacts now lets you share a contact by generating a QR code. GNOME Maps gained back keyboard navigation in the search results. Finally, GNOME boxes got a redesigned VM creation window that should be faster to use and easier to understand. And of course, the settings got a bunch of changes as well. First, the lockscreen got a redesign. Gone is the dark gray, drab background of the user list, now you get a nice blurred wallpaper in the background that reflects the wallpaper of the selected user. User icons are now much bigger to be more visible, and the font size of the click is also bigger. The network panel in the settings got support for Wireguard VPNs, the wifi panel now lets you share wifi network passwords in the form of a QR code as well. The accessibility panel was also reorganized and split into multiple pages instead of having one long page of settings split into categories, and they gained a new option to disable the overlay scrollbars. The mouse and the touchpad settings were redesigned, with nice animations to explain the difference between natural scrolling and traditional scrolling. You also finally get the option to disable mouse pointer acceleration. The About panel now shows the kernel version, the sound panel has a new volume level window, the alert chooser has been redesigned, and the sound test window has been improved as well.

It's a GOOD thing. One of the things I really enjoy about using Fedora, is that they push the Linux desktop towards the future. Some call it bleeding edge, but it's not. It's cutting edge: you don't get the absolute latest, but you get the best that's also stable. Fedora was among the first to adopt Wayland, the first to adopt Pipewire, to push Flatpak, portals, the first mainstream distro to push immutable filesystems in Fedora Silverblue. This drive towards modern tech was what Ubuntu was doing back in the day: they were implementing the latest versions of GNOME, adopted newly developed programs at the time, like Banshee, or F-Spot, they pushed to have better driver integration, and more software available. Using Fedora, I got that same excitement I used to get when I was using Ubuntu: every 6 months, there's a new drop of amazing updates. You get more modern technologies, you get improved security, you get new features right as they're being released, and you get that sense of really taking advantage of all that new stuff the Linux community talks about. Fedora is a "current" distro, which means that you get the latest release of all the interesting stuff, like the desktop environments, the linux kernel, the graphics drivers, or wayland. And they do this without sacrificing stability. Fedora, in my experience with it, has been rock solid. In general, I didn't have many problems with any Linux distro that I daily drove, but all of them tended to exhibit small issues after a while. My experience with Fedora has been fantastic thanks to this: Flatpak is wonderfully integrated in the GNOME Software app, it's all a one click install, all updates are handled there, I just never think about my system anymore, I just use it. That peace of mind is something I never truly achieved with any other Linux distro Another thing I really like is that Fedora has the DEFAULT experience. They ship the desktop as is, without any meaningful extensions, themes, configurations, or tweaks. It's just productivity central. GNOME, for me, doesn't need anything else than the default experience. It is extremely efficient once you wrap your head around how it works, and providing me with a crutch, like an always visible dock, or desktop icons, would just compromise that productivity. Moving to Fedora also had me learn a few things, especially how to use dnf. I didn't need to use it, but I wanted to; and since I was a lot more familiar with APT, I had no idea what I was doing. Turns out, Fedora has a huge community as well, something Ubuntu has had since it began, so it's another checkmark next to my "Fedora is the next Ubuntu" checklist
