In which I read one of Yehuda Amichai's poems in Hebrew and my English translation. The two of us together and each one alone By Yehuda Amichai Look sweetie- one more summer's turned dark And my dad hasn't come to the amusement park. The seesaw still goes up and down. The two of us together and each one alone. The horizon loses its ships off the shore. Hard to hold onto a thing anymore. The fighters crouched behind the hill. How much we need of mercy still! The two of us together and each one alone. The moon is sawing the clouds in two. Let hand-to-hand love bring me against you. We alone will make love where the two camps fight. Perhaps we can still make everything right. The two of us together and each one alone. My love has changed me, it seems plain, As the salt sea to drops of sweet first rain. I am brought to you slowly and falling, my dear. Receive me. No angel redeems us here. Because the two of us are together. Each is alone.

Near the wall of a house. Poem translated by Chana Bloch and Stephen Mitchell Yehuda Amichai (1924-2000) is recognized as one of Israel’s finest poets. He has published eleven volumes of poetry in Hebrew, two novels, and a book of short stories. His poems, written in Hebrew, have been translated into forty languages, and entire volumes of his work have been published in English, French, German, Swedish, Spanish, and Catalan. His work, like his life, is closely bound up with contemporary Israeli life. His poems have been called the nation’s “secular prayers.” Yehuda Amichai was born in Würzburg, Germany, to an Orthodox Jewish family, and was raised speaking both Hebrew and German. His German name was Ludwig Pfeuffer. His family fled the country during Hitler’s rise to power when Amichai was 12 and settled in Palestine. He attended Ma'aleh, a religious high school in Jerusalem. He was a member of the Palmach, the strike force of the Haganah, the defense force of the Jewish community in Mandate Palestine. As a young man he volunteered and fought in World War II as a soldier in the British Army, and in the Negev on the southern front in the 1947–1949 Palestine war. It was during World War II that Amichai began to be interested in poetry, reading modern English and American poetry, by authors such as Dylan Thomas, W.H. Auden, and T.S. Eliot. After discharge from the British Army in 1946, Amichai was a student at David Yellin Teachers College in Jerusalem, and became a teacher in Haifa. Amichai studied the Torah and Hebrew literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Encouraged by one of his professors at Hebrew University, he published his first book of poetry, Now and in Other Days, in 1955. In 1956, Amichai served in the Sinai War, and in 1973 he served in the Yom Kippur War. Amichai published his first novel, Not of This Time, Not of This Place, in 1963. It is about a young Israeli who was born in Germany; after World War II, and the 1947–1949 Palestine war, he visits his hometown in Germany and recalls his childhood, trying to make sense of the world that created the Holocaust. His second novel, Mi Yitneni Malon, about an Israeli poet living in New York, was published in 1971 while Amichai was a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He was a poet in residence at New York University in 1987. For many years he taught literature in an Israeli seminar for teachers, and at the Hebrew University to students from abroad. Amichai was invited in 1994 by Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin to read from his poems at the ceremony of the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo. "God Has Pity on Kindergarten Children" was one of the poems he read. This poem is inscribed on a wall in the Rabin Museum in Tel Aviv. There are streets named for him in cities in Israel, and also one in Würzburg. Amichai was married twice. He was first married to Tamar Horn, with whom he had one son, and then to Chana Sokolov; they had one son and one daughter. His two sons were Ron and David, and his daughter was Emmanuella. Amichai died of cancer in 2000, at age 76. Music Credits: Life is a moment by Markvard #poem #nearthewallofahouse #yehudaamichai #poetry #israelipoet

Israeli poet Yehuda Amichai reads from his Collected Poems, tells the sometimes sad, at times funny stories behind them, and reflects on the conflicts and connections between peoples and faiths. He describes the latter in terms of a shop window, where various religions vie for attention: “It’s like in every shop. If you buy one shirt, you don’t buy the other.”

Yehuda Amichai (1924-2000) is widely beloved as Israel’s “national poet.” His iconic poems are read at public ceremonies and Memorial Day services, but many of his lesser-known poems equally evoke the land and its history. Born in Germany, Amichai emigrated to Mandate Palestine in 1936, witnessed the birth and growth of the state and fought in many of its wars. With eminent translator/critic Robert Alter, we take an in-depth look at a few of Amichai’s poems and unlock the secrets of their lasting appeal. The Poetry of Yehuda Amichai 🤍 Israel at 75 offers a far richer culture than a visitor can grasp from just following its politics or visiting its tourist sites. One powerful way to plunge deeper is to read Israeli literature. Like the Talmud, though, it’s a vast sea. Where should you start? This program is part of a book series, co-sponsored by The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington and Moment Magazine, that explores today’s Israel through the eyes of writers in a kaleidoscope of genres: novel, memoir, short stories, poems. For each work, we offer a special guest: the author, the translator, or a scholar who guides readers through the text as well as field readers’ questions. Moment book review editor Amy E. TOP 20 Yehuda Amichai Quotes. Wallpapers - 🤍 “Every intelligent person, whether hes an artist or not – a mathematician, a doctor, a scientist – possesses a poetic way of seeing and describing the world.” — Yehuda Amichai (00:00) “Behind all this, some great happiness is hiding.” — Yehuda Amichai (00:07) “From the place where we are right, flowers will not grow in the spring.” — Yehuda Amichai (00:14) “Jerusalem is a port city on the shore of eternity.” — Yehuda Amichai (00:21) “The phrase I like to use to describe my sense of time-a play on comparative literature-is comparative time.” — Yehuda Amichai (00:28) “Love is like a reservoir of kindness and pleasure, like silos and pools during a siege.” — Yehuda Amichai (00:35) “I’ve often said that all poetry is political. This is because real poems deal with a human response to reality and politics is part of reality, history in the making. Even if a poet writes about sitting in a glass house drinking tea, it reflects politics.” — Yehuda Amichai (00:42) “And I said to myself: That’s true, hope needs to be like barbed wire to keep out despair, hope must be a mine field.” — Yehuda Amichai (00:49) “There are two languages: one as things seem to us and the other of knowledge.” — Yehuda Amichai (00:56) “The memory of my father is wrapped up in white paper, like sandwiches taken for a day of work. Just as a magician takes towers and rabbits out of his hat, he drew love from his small body.” — Yehuda Amichai (01:03) “God has pity on kindergarten children.” — Yehuda Amichai (01:10) “The reason a poet is a poet is to write poems, not to advertise himself as a poet.” — Yehuda Amichai (01:17) “My poems are political in the deeper sense of the word. Political means to live in your time, to be a man of your time.” — Yehuda Amichai (01:24) “And what will you do now? You’ll collect loves Like stamps. You’ve got doubles and no one Will trade you and you have the damaged ones.” — Yehuda Amichai (01:31) “I wanted to be calm, like a mound with all its cities destroyed, and tranquil, like a full cemetery.” — Yehuda Amichai (01:38) “I think the end is endless. It’s either a big black hole or a big white light or both together. But it’s totally meaningless, because even if someone would explain it, I wouldn’t understand it.” — Yehuda Amichai (01:45) “A flock of sheep near the airport or a high voltage generator beside the orchard: these combinations open up my life like a wound, but they also heal it. That’s why my feelings always come in twos.” — Yehuda Amichai (01:52) “The world of religion isn’t a logical world; that’s why children like it. It’s a world of worked-out fantasies, very similar to children’s stories or fairy tales.” — Yehuda Amichai (01:59) “And as we stray further from love, we multiply the words. Had we remained together we could have become a silence.” — Yehuda Amichai (02:06) “I try to stay a civilian, to live as a human, not as a poet.” — Yehuda Amichai (02:13) Music credit: Easy Day - Kevin MacLeod

In Episode 31 of the Caroline Glick Middle East News Hour, Caroline was joined by MK Amichai Chikli, the only member of Knesset from Naftali Bennett’s Yamina party’s Knesset faction who would not betray the party’s right-wing voters and refused to join Bennett when he formed a post-Zionist government with the radical left and the Islamist Ra’am party. Caroline and Amichai discussed his decision to remain true to the voters, the events and discussions that preceded it and the split itself. They then moved on to discuss Amichai’s work in the Knesset against the BDS campaign and the European Union’s proxy war against Israel which it wages with NGOs. “We are people who will not harm a fly… But if the fly bothers them, then it must be killed.” In an interview with state-owned Israeli television channel KAN 11, Israeli Minister of Heritage Amihai Eliyahu used a metaphor implying that Palestinians are like flies that should be killed if they bother Israelis while discussing Israel’s latest offensive on Gaza. Last week, air strikes launched by Israel killed at least 30 Palestinians including six children, according to the UN. Israel said it launched air strikes against Islamic Jihad militant sites, but civilian homes were also targeted.
