Appalachia is home to nearly 10% of the United State's population, with more than 25 million residents- spanning across 13 different U.S states. It's the home of real big cities like Pittsburgh (and arguably Atlanta); and countless popular medium-sized cities like Knoxville, Greenville, Huntsville, Chattanooga, and Asheville. Not to mention The Great Smoky Mountains, America's most visited national park, surrounded by several charming resort cities like Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Bryson City. However, Appalachia isn't known for its storied history, popular destinations, or importance to American demographics and economics. No, the Appalachian region is known (mostly) for the deep struggles happening across the most coal-dependent portions of Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia- an area built on the most rugged and complicated portion of the Appalachian Range. Honestly, you could argue that on the national scene, Appalachia isn't known for much of anything, besides economic strain and rural decline. The Appalachians are one of the most negatively perceived groups in the United States; oftentimes being portrayed as backwards, uncivilized and prejudiced, however their history and culture is inextricably tied to that of the entire continent and is often misunderstood. This is definitely one of the most tragic places in the country. Your idea of poverty is probably different from mine. But out here is on another level. I’m not sure if they know or even care how poor they are, and the poverty of the place isn’t going to be the only focus. But it’s a big part of what we’ll see here. It would be three weeks of criss crossing the tiny mountain roads in some of our most isolated communities. There are people back here who have never even left this region before. Some never will. We’ll be some big cities too. Well, big for here. As we’ll see, it’s a far different way of life in these twists and turns. The values, the culture and especially the way they view success. You could say it’s the most unique place in the country. And we’re gonna see it all during the dead of winter. I guess this is gonna to be Appalachia without its make up on.
