Unfortunately, making a good tabletop system that is well balanced and isn't convoluted is not as easy as it seems. It's part of the reason that D&D and Pathfinder are as popular as they are, and not just examples of what a group of friends could emulate to use between themselves. Sometimes, the makers of these games aren't perfect, and they overlook some very... crucial elements of their game. We're about to explore one of the most broken elements of D&D 3.5, and how you can potentially destroy the population of an entire continent at the humble level 12. If you've spent any time in a Dungeons and Dragons community during 3.5, you might have heard of the "Locate City Bomb," or perhaps as the "Locate City Nuke", but how does it work? The most confusing part is just how much setup there is behind the nuke, but it all starts with just a bit of snow or ice. In Frostburn for 3.5, there is a new feat called "Snowcasting" which states that if you add snow or ice as an additional material when casting a spell, the spell gains the "cold" descriptor. If we use "Flash Frost Spell" from The PHB 2, we can take our spell with the newly added cold descriptor, and force it to do an extra 2 points of guaranteed cold damage per spell level to all targets in the spell area. This is important because the initial spell is not required to deal damage in order for the extra 2 damage to be applied, and, regardless of the initial spell we are working on, Flash Frost Spell essentially turns it into a combat spell. This is all good, but we need the spell to be electric or sonic as well, and we currently only have a cold spell. At this point we could use "Energy Substitution" to turn the spell electric, but that conflicts with "Flash Frost Spell" which only works on spells with the cold descriptor. The solution is to use "Energy Admixture", which allows us to add the electric descriptor onto the spell as well as an extra 2 electric damage without forfeiting the cold descriptor and damage. Now that the spell is also electric, we can apply "Born of the Three Thunders" which has a few effects, but the one we're interested in is the additional Mighty Thunderclap that affects any creature that takes damage by the spell. The Mighty Thunderclap has the potential to stun enemies for 1 round unless they succeed on a Fortitude save, and knock them Prone unless they succeed on a Reflex save. This additional trait of the spell is important, because now all creatures that take damage are required to roll a Reflex save. This reflex save allows us to use the feat "Explosive Spell", which affects creatures that fail reflex saves caused by spells and throws them to a location outside the nearest edge of the spell area, taking 1d6 damage per 10 feet moved. So to put this together, can take any spell, turn it into a cold spell, make it do 2 damage to any target, make it into an electric spell as well, make it do another 2 damage, And then to top it off, hurl some of the targets all the way past the edge of the spell area. So what spell would we put this on? Ideally, we would pick a spell with a high range in order to do optimal damage by flinging the enemies a great distance, but what spell would we choose to accomplish this? What if I told you there is a spell that could potentially do 633,600 damage per creature in it's radius? Well I would not be lying, and the suspect here is not a likely one. Locate City is a spell with a range of 10 miles per level casted, which means if we apply this convoluted plan to the Locate City spell, we could throw enemies over 1 million feet at 20th level, and cause up to 600 thousand damage to any and all creatures withing range. That is powerful enough to wipe out most of the population of a small continent with just one spell that the creators of 3.5 probably intended to be a somewhat lackluster spell with a niche use at best.
