There are fears that as many as 20,000 people may have died in the flooding that's devastated northern Libya after dams burst during storms. The coastal city of Derna suffered the worst of the disaster. There have been desperate calls for more humanitarian support as victims lie wrapped in body bags and others have been buried in mass graves. Many people were washed out to sea when the floods struck. Rescue teams have been digging through the rubble of collapsed buildings in the hope of finding survivors. They have been drained to make way for agriculture as a result of the construction of dams for hydroelectric power, as well as for timber production. Wetlands are an integral part of the Danube floodplain landscape in Slovakia and draining them to plant trees has detrimental impacts on the environment. Wetlands store large amounts of carbon and are home to a diversity of plant and animal species that are specially adapted to the wet conditions. One of these species is the nationally endangered and endemic Pannonian root vole, which has declined drastically in Slovakia in response to disappearing wetlands. This project will turn forest back into a wetland by digging 650 meters of ditches. This will kickstart a “flood” of change and bring back a healthy functioning, sustainable and wilder ecosystem. The mayor of the eastern Libya port city of Derna estimates between 18,000 and 20,000 people have died in the catastrophic flooding. Abdulmenam Al-Ghaithi told al-Arabiya TV his estimate was based on the number of districts completely destroyed when two dams burst. More than 5,000 people are known to have died, and at least 10,000 are missing. Streets were swept away in the torrents and bodies are being recovered from the sea. Hong Kong was flooded by the heaviest rainfall in nearly 140 years on Friday, leaving the city's streets and some subway stations under water and forcing its schools to close. Just across the border, authorities in China's tech hub Shenzhen recorded the heaviest rains since records began in 1952. Climate change has increased the intensity of tropical storms, experts say, with more rain and stronger gusts leading to flash floods and coastal damage. The heavy rainfall in Hong Kong started on Thursday and in the hour leading up to midnight, the city's weather observatory recorded hourly rainfall of 158.1 millimetres at its headquarters, the highest since records began in 1884. Flooding in southern England brought on by half a month’s worth of rain falling in a single hour forced an airport to shut down. Exeter Airport told customers all its flights were cancelled following torrential downpours and thunderstorms. These included departures from Zante as well as the Channel Islands and Newcastle and Edinburgh. Footage showed rising waters sweep into the airport’s main terminal. Back in September 2020, we had a huge and heavy rainstorm where the water came down so much that our yard got flooded. As the storm got worse, so did the flooding. We quickly found that water was coming into our house through several areas. The rain kept coming down and the water kept coming inside our house! One of the worst areas was the basement where the water was seeping in through the window. The window well filled up to 7' deep until the window could not hold the weight of the water any longer and it busted allowing over 4,000 gallons of water into our basement. We frantically tried to save everything we could but time ran out on some things. We were hoping insurance would cover it but we did not have specific "flood" insurance so we were left to cover the damages to our home. We are almost done with the remodel of the basement and just had another storm today that was very similar to the one we had 3 years ago and we ended up getting water in our basement again!
