The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid Max with a 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder, a 6-speed automatic transmission, a combined 362 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, standard full-time electronic AWD. You can put regular fuel in the Grand Highlander. The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander offers 8” of ground clearance and it has an attractive exterior design which is inspired by the Highlander shape. The bold grille is a standout on the road reminds me a bit of Lexus, the low hood line is great for visibility, the doors are large making it easy to load and unload children and items in and out of the vehicle and the rear is simple yet sophisticated looking. The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid Max model has unique bumpers, black accented two-tone wheels and exposed dual exhaust tips. The Toyota Grand Highlander 2024 model year is a 3-row SUV that directly competes with the Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, and Kia Telluride. You've got three powertrain choices to pick from including the gas model, the hybrid model, and the Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid Max. The Hybrid Max is the most powerful making 362 horsepower from a 2.4L 4-cylinder turbo Hybrid MAX. Even though it’s built on a different platform than the existing Toyota Highlander, the Grand Highlander is kinda the same thing …but with more room for people and cargo. Starting in the front, there are independent armrests with a separate console lid. There’s a passenger-side dashboard tray with an adjacent USB port. There are also 3 cupholders for front occupants including a big one that can house hefty water bottles. Poke around and material quality is fine, but this is not a premium product. If you want premium vibes, look to the upcoming Lexus TX, whose underpinnings are shared with the Grand Highlander. Maximum occupancy for the Grand Highlander is 8 though that drops to 7 in higher trims thanks to 2nd-row captains’ chairs. For cargo space, the Grand Highlander offers a healthy 20.6 cu-ft behind the 3rd row. Nearly matching the Kia Telluride’s 21 cu-ft figure and exceeding the standard Highlander by 4.6 cu-ft. If you need more cargo space and fewer seats, dropping the 3rd row can be frustrating. I swear I’m not trying to make this look harder than it is. Finicky 2nd and 3rd-row seat operation is a trait the Highlander and Grand Highlander share. On a more positive note, we have infotainment. The Grand Highlander offers a standard 12.3” touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android auto, over-the-air updates, and voice control via the “Hey, Toyota” prompt. It’s the same system we’ve seen in other modern Toyotas and I find it easy to operate. Front-wheel drive comes standard with the base and hybrid models. All-wheel drive adds $1,600 to the price tag. Move to the most powerful Hybrid Max powertrain and all-wheel drive comes standard. That hybrid Max option is the same powertrain I drove in the Toyota Crown, which I described as “Spunky”. Beyond simply being more powerful, I enjoy the familiar acceleration feel delivered by the Max’s inclusion of a traditional 6-speed automatic transmission. Regarding price, the base XLE trim costs $43,070 plus destination and includes power heated front seats, smart key access with sensors on all the doors, a power liftgate, plus blind spot monitoring, lane keeping assist, full-speed dynamic cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian, bicyclist, and motorcyclist detection, and a feature that’ll bring the Grand Highlander to a safe stop if the driver is incapacitated. Unlike the smaller Highlander that’s offered in cheaper L and LE trims, the Grand Highlander has ditched those lower trims, skipping right to the well-equipped XLE. For perspective, the regular Highlander XLE starts at about $42,000. So, depending on which trim you're comparing, the Grand Highlander is anywhere from $1,000 to $4,000 pricier than its OG Highlander equivalent. Roomy 3-row midsize SUV alternatives include the Kia Telluride, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, Chevy Traverse, and perhaps the Jeep Grand Cherokee L. The nagging question for me is whether the Grand Highlander can justify its elevated base price versus the competition. Sure, the Grand comes well-equipped. Available in three powertrains across three grades: the well-balanced 2.4L turbo gas engine, the efficient 2.5L hybrid and the ultimate performance-seeking, 362 horsepower Hybrid MAX, the Grand Highlander is perfectly packaged for the road trip ahead. Designed by Calty Design Studios and exclusively assembled at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing plant in Princeton, Indiana, the 2024 Grand Highlander will have a starting MSRP of $43,070 for the gas engine models, $44,670 for the hybrid and $54,040 for the Hybrid MAX powertrain when it hits dealerships this Summer. As part of Toyota’s diverse approach to its carbon neutrality goals, Grand Highlander Hybrid and Hybrid MAX are two additional products that support Toyota’s effort to reach a “Beyond Zero” future. Beyond Zero is Toyota’s vision to reach carbon neutrality with products, services, and operations; and find new ways to make a positive impact on the planet and society. Three Powertrains Across Three Grades When it comes to deciding between performance or efficiency, Toyota offers both in the first-ever Grand Highlander. The gas engine has 265 horsepower and a 0-60 time of 7.5 seconds; the hybrid powertrain has 243 horsepower and a 0-60 time of 8.6 seconds; and last, but certainly not least, the Hybrid MAX powertrain makes Grand Highlander the most powerful Midsize SUV Toyota has ever built, with an impressive performance off the line thanks to 362-horsepower, 400 pound feet of torque and a 0-60 time of 6.3 seconds. The Hybrid MAX powertrain also has 5,000 lbs. of towing capacity. Electronic On-Demand AWD on hybrid models, provides excellent fuel efficiency, start-off acceleration, handling and stability. Electronic On-Demand AWD achieves stable performance by driving the rear wheels with a rear motor, to provide traction when needed in slippery conditions. The front and rear wheel driving force distribution is precisely controlled to the front and rear wheels between 100:0 and 20:80, to achieve optimal fuel efficiency and a comfortable driving performance. Available in three powertrains across three grades: the well-balanced 2.4L turbo gas engine, the efficient 2.5L hybrid and the ultimate performance-seeking, 362 horsepower Hybrid MAX, the Grand Highlander is perfectly packaged for the road trip ahead. Designed by Calty Design Studios and exclusively assembled at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing plant in Princeton, Indiana, the 2024 Grand Highlander will have a starting MSRP of $43,070 for the gas engine models, $44,670 for the hybrid and $54,040 for the Hybrid MAX powertrain when it hits dealerships this Summer. “Grand Highlander will serve as the ultimate tool that can take our customers anywhere from the school pick-up line to the ultimate long-weekend road trip,” said Lisa Materazzo, Group Vice President of Toyota Marketing. “We’ve sold over 3.3 million Highlanders in the U.S. and developed a loyal customer base in the process – and we think customers will give Grand Highlander similar praise when it comes to dealerships this Summer.” As part of Toyota’s diverse approach to its carbon neutrality goals, Grand Highlander Hybrid and Hybrid MAX are two additional products that support Toyota’s effort to reach a “Beyond Zero” future. Three Powertrains Across Three Grades When it comes to deciding between performance or efficiency, Toyota offers both in the first-ever Grand Highlander. AWD Prowess All powertrains can be equipped with all-wheel drive (AWD) - as an option on the well-balanced 2.4L turbo gas engine and the efficient 2.5L hybrid or standard on the powerful Hybrid MAX. Dynamic Torque Control AWD on the gas models works to actively distribute torque between the front and rear axles, as well as the two rear wheels. It uses an electromagnetic coupling ahead of the rear differential to engage or disengage the rear wheels as needed the result is improved traction and enhanced driving stability.
