In 2004, a new series was released on the new TV Channel Star One that would go down in history as one of the cult classic sitcoms from Hindi serials - Sarabhai vs Sarabhai. This show is still so relevant today in the form of cultural references, memes, imagery and jokes - one might not believe that when it was first released, there wasn't much viewership for it. In this video we deep dive into why this show became such an icon and what is so unique about it - welcome on a journey of comedy, humour, philosophy and a lot of nerding out to another India in Pixels video essay.
In this video, we discuss an interesting feature in linguistics called clusivity - a feature that helps languages distinguish if the listener is included when the speaker says "we". It is an interesting quirk that we compare across the varied languages of India - from Marathi and Gujarati, from Tamil to Malayalam, Telugu, from Kannada and Tulu to Dhundhari (Dhundari) and Punjabi. We try to see through this video how cultures create social boundaries and how it helps shape the way people construct belongingness. v and w are two sounds that are closely related that a lot of languages in the world struggle to pronounce. They use different approximations to make these sounds. Let's take a linguistic journey throughout India's many languages to see how Indians pronounce these sounds. Be it the Hindi व, the Malayali വ, Odia ୱ or Axomiya ৱ - let us explore the story that ties the contrasting languages of India into one beautiful garland. The Awadhi language is spoken in the Awadh region of modern day Uttar Pradesh, some parts of Nepal and even in far away lands of Fiji, Guyana and Suriname. It is the language in which poets Malik Mohammad Jayasi and Goswami Tulsidas wrote Padmavat and Ramcharitmanas. The Hanuman Chalisa written by Tulsidas, in praise of Hanuman ji, is an Awadhi composition, just as the set of dohas by Kabir in his collection 'Bijak'. How has this language evolved over time? In this video, we will be exploring the fascinating language of Brajabuli. It is a unique blend of Bengali and Maithili, and was created by Bengali speakers who were huge fans of Maithili, but did not actually speak the language themselves. They wrote songs in this hybrid language as a way to express their devotion to Radha and Krishna, and it was Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and his followers who popularized it. It is important to note that Brajabuli should not be confused with Braj Bhasha, which is spoken in Uttar Pradesh. Brajabuli, on the other hand, is a form of Maithili that originated in the lands of Bengal. In the past, Maithili and Bengali were written in the same script, which has now evolved into the Tirhut script. So come join us as we delve into the rich history and culture behind the beautiful language of Brajabuli. Video essay by Ashris, India in Pixels. While every national anthem does that, the specifics about which emotion it uses to stir partriotism, what kind of emotion it uses and what words it picks are all dependent on a country's history and macro-psychology. In this video, I re-create a project by Lucas de Sa where I use K-Means clustering, an unsupervised learning algorithm to automatically classify all the national anthems of the world into five different groups. In the process we go through the alleys of data science, psychology and music - a cocktail of the many topics of interest you will find on India in Pixels.
The map shows the top trending Google searches for every state of India. Trending searches from 2010 to 2020 were taken from Google's annual Year in Search summary and then Google Trends was used to get region-specific information per year. Google Trends provides relative search interest for every search term, along with the interest by state. Using these two datasets for each term, we're able to calculate the relative search interest for every state for a particular month. India has produced so many gems that have lit the world. The highest token of honour any civilian in India can receive is the #BharatRatna. Instituted in 1954, the award is conferred "in recognition of exceptional service/performance of the highest order", without distinction of race, occupation, position, or sex. The award was originally limited to achievements in the arts, literature, science, and public services, but the government expanded the criteria to include "any field of human endeavour" in December 2011. The recommendations for the Bharat Ratna are made by the Prime Minister to the President, with a maximum of three nominees being awarded per year. Recipients receive a Sanad (certificate) signed by the President and a peepal-leaf–shaped medallion; there is no monetary grant associated with the award. Bharat Ratna recipients rank seventh in the Indian order of precedence. In this video, we shall see how different Indian states rank when compared on the basis of number of Bharat Ratnas produced. Please remember, that it was not easy in all cases to classify a person to one state and the best judgment was taken. This video in particular, isn't really about ranking states but paying tribute to the bright men and women who have made #India proud. India has made great strides in socioeconomic metrics ever since her independence. One of the key metrics of progress is literacy rate which is very strongly tied to economic progress. The definition of #LiteracyRate is different in all countries. The one in India has a very low bar - the number of people above 7 years who can read and write in any language. In spite of such a generic definition, India has only about 70% literacy rate. It is a known fact that Kerala is the most literate state in India [PS: Shouldn't we just declare Kerala the best state in India yet!], but how about other states? How has the list changed? And wait for it, how is it going to change in the future? Yes, you heard that right. This also projects data into the future till 2050 and gives you what might the literacy rate then be. The official list for 2011 is: 1. Kerala (94%) 2. Mizoram (91.5%) 3. Goa (89%) 4. Tripura (87.5%) 5. Himachal Pradesh (83.2%) Support me on Patreon: 🤍 Support me on Buymeacoffee: 🤍 Follow us on our social media handles: YouTube ▶️ 🤍 Facebook 💻 🤍 Instagram ❣️🤍 Twitter 🐦 🤍 Website 🌏 iashris.com Contact: hello🤍iashris.com

Narrating a Nation Through Numbers: India in Pixels The field of data viz is West-centric. As provocative as the statement is, it also is optimistic because it means there is a lot of room for others to join. Growing up, I was fascinated with maps but could not see my experience as an Indian reflected in the stories being told in international mapping communities - it mattered because I knew India is more nuanced than just being a populated mess of a nation without toilets. So I went from "Why is nobody making an India centric map community" to "Why am I not making an India centric map community"? India in Pixels is the story of building a community, of exploring the Identity of a nation that is still struggling to define her identity. In my talk, I will share my human story of how data viz became a tool for me to connect with my national identity and help ponder over complex issues of my country and myself.
The value of a company is determined by its market share, that is, the value investors estimate the company to be worth - it is simply the number of shares multiplied by the value of each share. It should not be mistaken for the revenue of a company. A company can have a high revenue but a low market value, for example, a car company in huge debt. On the other hand, a tech company may not have a high revenue but it can have a huge market share - like Facebook. Please do subscribe to keep this channel going! It must be common knowledge by now that Hindi is not the national language of India. No language is the national language for that matter. Hindi and English, however, are official languages of the Union of India used to conduct administrative tasks related to the government. In addition to the official languages Hindi and English, the constitution recognizes 22 regional languages, which includes Hindi but not English, as scheduled languages. The number of native Hindi speakers is about 25% of the total Indian population; however, including dialects of Hindi termed as Hindi languages, the total is around 44% of Indians, mostly accounted from the states falling under the Hindi belt. This video shows how the number of speakers who use a language as their mother tongue has changed from 1961 to 2031. Everything after 2011 is a projection. Indecoded is a project I did in 2016 that I thought might interest viewers of India in Pixels. The project is a #cartogram #visualization of #India where the data distorts the map to make a graphical representation of the #statistics. The states for which the statistics are pronounced will swell up while those with a lower value of that stat will shrink down - thus making it easy to understand the data all at once. At the time of the making of this project, files with Telangana divided from Andhra hadn't been made, hence we see a unified Andhra. Also, UTs are skipped. You can play with the live version here: 🤍 and the developers among you can fork the repo on Github and start playing around too.
