If you purchase using these links, I'll receive a small commission at no extra charge to you. - When IPv4 first came out, the people that designed it sat back in their chairs and said, “We’ve done it, we’ve created every IP address that anyone will ever need”. How many addresses did they create? 4,294,967,296! But at the time, they couldn’t have imagined the massive explosion of devices that would require an IP address. If you think about every device you own, like a pc, laptop, smartphone, tv etc. It quickly became apparent that we would soon run out of IPv4 addresses. The solution is to eventually move over to the new IPv6 addresses! IPv6 provides us with 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 addresses! Aside from the number of addresses, IPv6 also brings a lot of other improvements that make it a lot more efficient and practical. An IPv6 address is 128-bits long. This is what gives us a huge address space. IPv6 has 8 sections which are commonly called hextets. Each hextet is separated by a colon. It's a hexadecimal IP address, meaning it can contain both numbers and letters. There are different types of IPv6 addresses, for different purposes. Global Unicast - A publicly routable address like the IPv4 public IP. - Prefix: 2000::/3 Unique Local - This address is like the ipv4 private IP addresses. - Prefix: FC00::/7 Link-Local - Automatic private IP addresses that are not routable over any network. - Prefix: FE80::/10 Multicast - Addresses that are sent to a group of computers or devices. - Prefix: FF00::/8 Anycast - Global Unicast address assigned to more than one device. - Prefix: 2000::/3 #ccna #cisco #networking

I get asked a lot in the comments section "Why should I use IPv6 in my homelab"? And it's a valid question, IPv4 being the norm in so many networking tutorials and classes, what advantages are there really to v6 anyway? Well today, I'm going to explain a hypothetical setup with multiple services sharing a single public IPv4, the NAT "solutions" that the industry has moved to for dealing with the IPv4 exhaustion problem, and how the end-to-end principle of IPv6 solves all of these issues easily. Of course, I'm focused on homelab users, but expanding this to small or medium businesses, the impact of properly routing traffic for your internal and external users can't be underestimated. Hopefully in the future I can expand this with a setup guide on the IPv4 compatibility reverse proxy, but for now enjoy this explanation of the benefits of moving your infrastructure to V6! The time has come to talk about something uncomfortable to a lot of you. You've been using legacy methods for far too long. It's time to move to IPv6. But, of course, there's a lot more to IPv6 than 'just' switching everything over. A lot of systems in the world still haven't adopted it after nearly 25 years, and although software support is virtually a requirement these days, that doesn't mean it's widely enabled. There are also still a lot of misconceptions from network administrators who are scared of or don't properly understand IPv6, and I want to address all of that. But, for me to describe to you the best setup for your networks going forward, I need to understand for myself how all of the IPv6 transition mechanisms and behaviors work. Public and Private IPv6 Addresses | Free CCNA Training Course Welcome to the Free CCNA Training Course. This series is for anyone who wants to build on their basic network skills, and even pass the CCNA 200-301 exam. Section 3 of this series covers IPv6. This covers topics such as an IPv6 overview, how IPv6 addresses work, address types, address assignment, and routing with IPv6. The website has additional links for further study to take you to the next level. Links are at the end of the description. In this video, we’re going to cover: 0:00 Public Address Space 2:33 Local Addresses 4:38 Multicast and Anycast 6:16 Subnetting IPv4 addresses were all meant to be public. Unfortunately, running low on address space means we needed to use private IPs and NAT. IPv6 is going back to this model by making most addresses ‘Global Unicast’ addresses. Most addresses will be routable on the internet. Each IPv6 enabled interface has a link-local address, starting with fe80. This is used for all communication over the local link. This includes NDP communication. Link-local addresses are usually assigned automatically using EUI-64. Unique local addresses are similar to private addresses in IPv4. They are routable on your local network, but not over the internet. They generally aren’t recommended. There are no more broadcasts in IPv6. This is now handled by multicast, which is far more efficient. A new type of traffic is Anycast, where multiple devices can have the same IP. Any one of them can respond to a client’s request. IPv6 and IPv4 can work side-by-side. This is called dual-stack, and is one of the methods of migration to IPv6. IPv6 is routable like IPv4, and can be subnetted in the same way. /64 networks are the most commonly used. There is no broadcast in IPv6. Unicast is the term used to describe communication where a piece of information is sent from one point to another point. Unicast is a one-to-one type of network communication. In this case there is just one sender, and one receiver. For Example 1) Browsing a website. (Web server is the sender and your computer is the receiver.) Multicast is the term used to describe communication where a piece of information is sent from one point to a set of other points. Multicast is a type of communication where multicast traffic addressed for a group of devices on the network. IPv6 multicast traffic are sent to a group and only members of that group receive the Multicast traffic. In this case there is may be one sender, and the information is distributed to a set of receivers or example, TV channels. The multicast server generate only one stream of data and that stream is replicated to different devices, who are interested in that data traffic. Anycast is a type of IPv6 network communication in which IPv6 datagrams from a source are routed to the nearest device (in terms of routing distance) from a group servers which provide the same service. Anycast, also known as IP anycast, is a networking technique that allows for multiple machines to share the same IP address. Every nodes which provide the same service are configured with same Anycast destination address. Based on the location of the user request, the routers send it to the machine in the network that is closest.

Today my topic is Neighbor Discovery Protocol or NDP. Similar to IPv4’s address resolution protocol (ARP), IPv6’s NDP uses ICMPv6 to discover each other on a local network. It is used to get the MAC/Link Layer addresses of available hosts, and the connection information of available routers. In this video, I will talk about Router Solicitation (RS), Router Advertisement (RA), neighbor solicitation (NS), neighbor advertisement (NA) and redirect message. ICMPv6 types are also discussed.
