Korean War 1950-1953 - The Cold War DOCUMENTARY

The Korean War began on June 25, 1950, when some 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People’s Army poured across the 38th parallel, the boundary between the Soviet-backed Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the north and the pro-Western Republic of Korea to the south. This invasion was the first military action of the Cold War. By July, American troops had entered the war on South Korea’s behalf. As far as American officials were concerned, it was a war against the forces of international communism itself. After some early back-and-forth across the 38th parallel, the fighting stalled and casualties mounted with nothing to show for them. Meanwhile, American officials worked anxiously to fashion some sort of armistice with the North Koreans. The alternative, they feared, would be a wider war with Russia and China–or even, as some warned, World War III. Finally, in July 1953, the Korean War came to an end. In all, some 5 million soldiers and civilians lost their lives in what many in the U.S. refer to as “the Forgotten War” for the lack of attention it received compared to more well-known conflicts like World War I and II and the Vietnam War. The Korean peninsula is still divided today. Frozen Chosin - Korean War - Forgotten History

The Battle of Chosin Reservoir, also known as the Chosin Reservoir Campaign or the Battle of Lake Changjin was an important battle in the Korean War. The battle took place about a month after the People's Republic of China entered the conflict and sent the People's Volunteer Army (PVA) 9th Army to infiltrate the northeastern part of North Korea. On 27 November 1950, the Chinese force surprised the US X Corps commanded by Major General Edward Almond in the Chosin Reservoir area. Hosted by Colin Heaton. The Price of Freedom - Korean War

Exhibition video from The Price of Freedom: Americans at War in the National Museum of American History

Five Crucial Facts About the Korean War

During WWII, two global super powers emerged including the United States and the Soviet Union. Both powers held strong beliefs on how a society should be run, thus prolonging the conflict between the capitalist and communist societies. The first step to understanding the divide lies in the 38th parallel; a horizontal line that split North and South Korea. The United States took hold of the South while the Soviet Union controlled the North. The president of the United States, Harry Truman saw the spread of communism to be a global threat and used his power to prevent the North Korean invasion. With the help of the United Nations, American forces managed to regain lost territory and reclaim the South Korean capital, Seoul. The war continued for two more years as negotiation talks dragged on. By 1953, Dwight Eisenhower was elected as the new president of the Unites States. Eisenhower vowed to end the war once in for all. A few months later, Soviet Union leader Joseph Stalin passed away and the armistice was signed as truce was achieved. Today, the Korean Demilitarised Zone which was established in July 27, 1953 maintains the division between North and South Korea. The zone is deemed the most heavily guarded border in the world. #Biography #KoreanWar Subscribe for more Biography: 🤍 Delve deeper into Biography on our site: 🤍 Follow Biography for more surprising stories from fascinating lives: Facebook - 🤍 Instagram - 🤍 Twitter - 🤍 Biography.com captures the most gripping, surprising, and fascinating stories about famous people: The biggest break. because the Korean War split couples and families into North and South Korea | the Separated Family

What a tragedy of love the Korea War has made. A couple reunited after 35 years, a father and daughter, an older sister and younger brother. The so-called 'separated family'. Shocking Things you Did Not Know about the Korean War

The Korean War gets a lot less attention than the wars that America participated in immediately before and after it, World War Two and The Vietnam War. But anyone who is interested in history and why the world is the way it is today should know about The Korean War. Understanding the Korean War shows how the American armed services went from being a force that could destroy Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan to a military that failed to stop the communist takeover in Vietnam. In some ways, the Korean War was almost much more disastrous for the Americans than Vietnam. In fact, at one point, the North Koreans almost pushed the American Army out of the country for good. And the South Koreans, whom the Americans were allied with, did some terrible things that will make you wonder why the US even wanted to fight for them in the first place. At least two million civilians died, although that number might be much closer to three million. Similarly, the combined military deaths were at least 500,000 and might be well over one million. But it was also a weird war, where both sides made some strange decisions. Today let’s go back in time to reveal weird and sad things about the Korean War that you didn’t know. Viewer discretion is advised for this video as some of this video may be offensive or disturbing.
