Ukrainian soldiers attempted to regain control of a village near Kyiv on Thursday as they engaged in fighting with Russian troops, RFE (Radio Free Europe) reported. Gunfire and explosions rang out through the wooded area near the settlement as forces were seen by an RFE journalist approaching the village on foot. The group can be seen carrying RPGs and anti-tank weaponry with them. "We'll be clearing the village of 'orcs' who occupied it with armored vehicles. According to our intelligence, there's a battalion there," one soldier claimed. Another exclaimed to the RFE crew that he would "kill" the Russian soldiers as retaliation for the attacks on the city of Mariupol. With Russia's invasion of Ukraine now in its third week, Russian forces appear to be expanding the offensive by striking new areas in the west of the country. Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved the recruitment of “volunteers” from Syria and elsewhere to fight in Ukraine. In footage that emerged on social media, Russian soldiers apparently surrendered to a group of Ukrainian troops after driving up to them in an armoured vehicle. Russia launched a failed attack on the village of Klishchiivka. Troops were thrown into a suicidal ‘human wave’ attack. More than a dozen Russian soldiers took part in the assault. Drone footage shows an armoured vehicle taking them into battle. But the vehicle flees almost immediately, leaving the troops alone. They quickly get stuck as Ukrainian artillery explodes around them. With no way forwards or backwards, the soldiers are wiped out. Klishchiivka is located to the south of Bakhmut. Ukraine has recently taken high ground around the town. Taking the town itself is important to surrounding Bakhmut.
