In this video we take a look at the WeMos D1: a Wi-Fi enabled Arduino compatible board based on the ESP8266 chip. The price of it is so tempting, less than 9$. Without any second thoughts I ordered it a few days ago I received it and started working with it. The board looks like an ordinary Arduino board. The dimensions and the pin layouts are exactly the same. So, this board is compatible with all the existing shields for Arduino. But don't expect them to work at once, since the libraries available for the ESP8266 chip are few so far. Many of the terrain tronics boards use a commonly available board called the Wemos D1 Mini as the central brain of operations. The Microcontroller on the Wemos D1 Mini is an ESP8266 - an easy to program, wifi capable chip that can handle all the cool lighting and control effects we want to do with our #Wargaming and #DungeonsandDragons #Terrain. However, the chip that sits between your USB cable and the ESP8266 requires a driver to work on Windows (and on Mac and USB). The Wemos D1 Mini ESP8266 stackable! A tiny, stackable version of the Wemos D1 ESP8266, with many "shields" to add functionality. (Products provided by Banggood) The ESP8266-based boards, Arduino-sized, are very popular as they efectively give you Arduino Uno capabilities but with built in wi-fi. Wemos have a D1 (R2) version that is very popular. Now, Wemos have a mini-sized board, the Wemos D1 Mini which has the same functionality as the full-sized board and which lends itself to allowing stackable shields, or add-ons, to give it extra functionality. For example, you want to add a tiny OLED screen? How about a LiPO battery module to keep it running? Or a temperature module?
